Myringoplasty

Myringoplasty

Myringoplasty is a surgical procedure to repair a perforated eardrum, also known as a tympanic membrane perforation.

Why is it done?

A perforated eardrum can occur due to various reasons, including:

  • Middle ear infections: The most common cause, where pressure builds up in the middle ear and ruptures the eardrum.
  • Trauma: Loud noises, sudden pressure changes (e.g., diving), or physical injury can damage the eardrum.
  • Chronic ear infections: Repeated infections can weaken the eardrum, leading to a tear.
  • Foreign objects: Cotton swabs or other objects inserted into the ear can puncture the eardrum.

A perforated eardrum can cause various problems, including:

  • Hearing loss: The eardrum is essential for conducting sound waves to the inner ear, so a tear can cause hearing loss.
  • Chronic ear infections: The open eardrum allows bacteria and other germs to enter the middle ear, increasing the risk of infections.
  • Tinnitus: A ringing or buzzing sound in the ear is a common symptom of a perforated eardrum.
