Stapedectomy

Stapedectomy

Stapedectomy surgery is a delicate procedure performed to treat conductive hearing loss caused by otosclerosis, a condition where the stapes bone in the middle ear becomes fixed and unable to vibrate properly.

What it does:

  • Removes the stapes bone or part of it.
  • Replaces it with a tiny prosthetic stapes made of metal or plastic.
  • Restores the transmission of sound waves from the eardrum to the inner ear, improving hearing.

Who needs it:

  • People with otosclerosis-related hearing loss that hasn't improved with other treatments like hearing aids.
  • Typically not recommended for children under 18 as the middle ear bones are still developing.
